My WordPress 2.6 installation had been prompting me for quite some time to upgrade to the latest 2.7 installation. So yeaterday, I finally used Fantastico and upgraded. I think this is a big improvement over the previous one. The look is cleaner and the navigation more intuitive. The whole thing looks more like it should have in the first place.
A couple of things that I really like about WP 2.7 are the redesigned dashboard where everything is really well placed. I like the menus on the left and the fact that they are collapsable. I also really like the fact that the panels can be dragged and moved according to where I want to put them.
Also as part of the new dashboard is the Quickpress area which you can use as a quick note area if you get an idea for a new blog and save a draft really quickly. I think this is really useful and saves a lot of clicks.
Another really cool feature that I think that I will be using quite frequently is the “quick edit” feature in the screen when the posts are listed for you. This may not be very useful for many bloggers, but when you are using Magazine Style Themes and have to quickly changes categories of posts for changing the theme’s functionality, this is really useful.
No more multiple clicks and new tabs to change that featured post!
All in all this has been a good upgrade. What I would like more to be done in this new look is to make the left menu items also movable like the panels in the Dashboard. Right now the “Settings” is right at the bottom and I would prefer it to be a bit higher.
