Camera Shootout: Old Sony VS New Sony

Having migrated to a SLR camera, I have stopped using my Sony S80 point and shoot as much. In fact the last time that I used it was when I was writing a review of the Sony A300 that I bought in December 08. My S80 has served me well for the last 4 years, right up until December 25th 2008. I might still have not bought the SLR if the card reader in the S80 had not gone bad and stopped reading the memory cards. The S80 was a very versatile camera, allowing me to shoot with the ease of a point and shoot and also creatively with a full manual mode.

This is a comparison of my 4 year old Sony DSC S80 Point and Shoot and my brand new Sony Alpha DSLR 300K. At the end of this comparison I myself was surprised at how little different the two are for the average user.

After having gone through the manuals of both these cameras for this comparison, I realized that I was able to almost everything with the S80 that I am able to do with the A300 albeit at a much lower resolution. Plus, I always wanted a SLR camera.

    why the hell do you compare these two? and you missed a "D" in the SLR :).

    most point and shoots today can do sooo much, and most people dont use 10% even of those features.
    Its harder to get it right with a DSLR what you can do with a P&S, which i'm finding out now

    BUT a DSLR is not about those features alone. The tremendous opportunity of Lenses, and the creativity that you can bring with it. why do people go to a DSLR…for a bigger challenge..frankly i still love my P&S and i can dish out good shots with it, could i do it better with my DSLR..not right now, but thats what the challenge is, coz i know once i do, i can exceed the level i'm dishing out.

    For me a DSLR is about a challenge, and not coz its expensive and it will give a better higer reso image at auto mode

    where do i go next.. full frame :) ..hehe

      Yes… Todays P&S are very capable. There is even a Sigma P&S which is full frame. it costs more than most DSLRs.

      Maybe I should compare the A300 and the one you bought! 😉

      @Joshi
      How much did it finally cost you? And have you bought any accessories for it? Let me know if there are some interesting accessories that I can try for my camera!

      • February 26, 2009 at 10:12 AM #

        not yet..still waiting for my camera bag! forget accessories..get lenses..ah yes ..cable release would be good or a wirless remote..does ur camera support it? but in any case these are hardly used things. I'll plan on getting a few lenses now, they make all the difference.

            I think before I can buy lenses, I will have to take Anu's permission and save up some money too. I have however bought some coloured filters and macro filters.

    • February 27, 2009 at 12:53 PM #
